Attack on Trade Union Rights
“… Then they came for the trade unionists…”
EDMONTON – The Harper government has shown its true colours with its reprehensible attack on trade union rights.
The famous poem by Martin Niemöeller ends "then they came for me - and there was no one left to speak for me".
Even if one were to accept that there was economic necessity (which we don't); even if one were to accept that the essential services of Canada Post had to be restored (which we don't, because CUPW members were rotating their strikes and were delivering essential pieces of mail), even if one were to accept that there was some justification to legislating an end to the dispute (which we don't), the imposition of a wage that is less than offered by the Corporation is an unconscionable attack on the workers, and on trade unions in general.
All people of good faith should protest this blatant attack on fundamental trade union and human rights. Failing to do so will only embolden a government that has validated the fears of the nearly 60 per cent of Canadians who did not vote for them.
