EDMONTON METRO AND CALGARY METRO SUPPLEMENTAL PENSION PLAN
HSAA is currently addressing the EMS Supplemental Pension Plan in
collective bargaining as directed by the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
Despite this, on December 21, 2011, AHS advised HSAA that it was ceasing
further employee and employer remittances to the Plan, and would begin the
process to (among other things) “return employer remittances back to AHS in
early 2012”. HSAA believes this is improper and that AHS is not entitled
to a return of the employer remittances to the Plan. HSAA instructed its
legal counsel to reply to AHS, and we have posted for your information a
copy of that response which clarifies HSAA’s position on this issue – that
all contributions to the Plan are held “in trust” and cannot be dealt with
or distributed until all parties, including the trustees of the Plan, are
in agreement.
To be clear, AHS cannot make decisions on what occurs with the
contributions currently held in trust by the Plan trustees. HSAA, AHS, and
the trustees are now engaging in discussions regarding the status of the
funds, and no decision will be made until all parties complete their due
diligence on this issue. It is expected that the parties will also need to
consult with the Superintendent of Pension, the Canada Revenue Agency, and
likely the Courts before any decision is finalized.
This process will take a number of months, and HSAA will provide you with
regular updates, including notice of any Court applications, as it
proceeds.
HSAA's New Internal Structure
HSAA is pleased to announce the appointment of Lynette McAvoy to the newly created position of Executive Director.
The internal structural change was approved by the board of Directors as part of the organization's succession planning.
Patricia Heffel, Director of Administrative Services, will be retiring after 16 years of dedicated service to our union.
Over the next while, Pat will be working with Lynette and the entire staff to effect a seamless transition that will create a unified staff structure to best serve the needs of the membership.
Please see the revised management structure in the attachment below.
We invite members to join all of us in congratulating Lynette and in thanking Pat as we wish her all the best in her transition to retirement.
